Viña Zorzal Wines produces wines int he DO Navarra and DOCa Rioja regions of Spain. The winery is located in Fitero, the only Navarran village belonging to the Iberian mountains. The 2016 Viña Zorzal Señora de last Alturas is an old vine, 100% Garnacha. Many of these vines are ungrafted with an average age of 140 years! The grapes are hand-harvested, with alcoholic fermentation taking place with native yeasts in two 500l French oak barrels. The Malo and aging take place for 12 months in two-year old 500l and 220l French oak, as well, The wine is then clarified and filtered. This gorgeous wine is clear and bright, with a garnet color. On the nose it is clean and intense, with concentrations of both forest fruit and red fruit; it is an earthy and spicy wine. On the palate the wine is fresh and dry with marked acidity. Broad and balanced, it is full and meaty, with flavors of forest fruit and spice.
